Helpful Tips for Lost and Found Pets

Call and Visit Shelters:
Contact the Galveston Island Humane Society and other animal shelters in your surrounding area to see if your pet is there or if someone has filed a Found Report for your animal. It is suggested that you visit in person. Your description may not be the same as ours.

File a Lost Report:
File a lost report online here. Don’t forget to send pictures of the animal.

Search Our Website:
If your pet has been missing for a while, also search our Available for Adoption page. Found pets are available for adoption after three days – the stray hold period required by law.

Continue Searching:
Follow up by visiting or calling the Galveston Island Humane Society and other shelters and continue checking shelter websites – your pet may show up after you called or searched the first time.

Microchip Information
If your pet is microchipped and you have had ANY change in phone number, address, or any other information, please contact your pet’s microchip company ASAP to update that information and/or verify that it is correct. Up-to-date information is a MUST because when we scan your pet for a microchip, all we read is a number which is then plugged into a database with the given information in it. GIHS staff strives to find owners with out-of-date information, however, current and accurate information all but guarantees that if your pet ends up here, it can be easily returned to you! Remember, microchips can be read by many organizations, so do not depend on your local shelter, they must be current.

Create a Lost Pet Flier:
Create a “Lost Pet” flier and post it at local veterinarian hospitals or clinics, pet stores, coffee shops, and on Facebook post on Lost Pets of Galveston Island.
