Are you missing a dog?

Report lost or found animals to GIHS and we will display them below to assist in reuniting owners and pets. Please note that when animals are brought into GIHS, they are immediately logged into our system as “new arrival” and will display below for a minimum of 72 hours. These animals are NOT available for adoption; please do not inquire about adoption until these animals move to the Dog adoption page.

If you see your pet’s photo on this page, please contact us at (409) 740-1919 to make an appointment for redemption.

Important Notice

Texas law states that after a stray pet goes 72 hours unclaimed, ownership falls to the pet’s current caretaker (a.k.a. GIHS) and the pet can legally be placed up for adoption. It is of utmost importance that you check frequently for your lost pet!

Helpful tips for finding lost pets

If you are missing a pet, please use these helpful tips to increase your chances of reunion with your missing pet.

Call and Visit Shelters:

Contact the Galveston Island Humane Society and other animal shelters in your surrounding area to see if your pet is there or if someone has filed a Found Report for your animal. It is suggested that you visit in person. Your description may not be the same as ours.

Search Our Website:

If your pet has been missing for a while, also search our Available for Adoption page. Found pets are available for adoption after three days – the stray hold period required by law.

Continue Searching:

Follow up by visiting or calling the Galveston Island Humane Society and other shelters and continue checking shelter websites – your pet may show up after you called or searched the first time.

Microchip Information

If your pet is microchipped and you have had any change in phone number, address, or other information, please contact your pet’s microchip company ASAP to update or verify that information. Up-to-date information is essential because when we scan your pet for a microchip, all we read is a number linked to a database with your details. GIHS staff works hard to locate owners with outdated information, but current and accurate details almost guarantee your pet can be returned quickly. Remember, microchips are readable by many organizations, so don’t rely solely on your local shelter; ensure your info is current.

File a Lost Report:

File a lost report online here if you haven't already. Don’t forget to send pictures of the animal.

Create a Lost Pet Flier:

Create a “Lost Pet” flier and post it at local veterinarian hospitals or clinics, pet stores, coffee shops, and on
