Join Galveston Island Humane Society for our 27th annual Krewe of Barkus & Meoux parade on February 15th, at Noon! Stemming from a desire for locals and their pets to have a way to be involved in the Mardi Gras! Galveston festivities, the Galveston Island Humane Society created the Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Parade in 1988, and this crowd-pleasing event has been going strong ever since! Proceeds from this walk will support our community programs including emergency care, spay/neuter assistance, and vaccination and microchip clinics.
Leading the parade each year is the “Elite Pet Owner” – a title awarded at the annual Paws Gala, which is held each September. This year’s winners are Georgia and Dolly, supported by their mom Lindsey Serrette.
The Krewe is also continuing the Cat’s Eye View Balcony Party, which grows bigger and better each year. Sponsors, walkers, and donors will all help us produce a successful event that will help so many animals.
Registration is “per pet” and they may bring their favorite people! Event shirts are not guaranteed for late or on-site registrations. Registration deadline is February 11, 2026.
Remember, animals must be current on ALL vaccinations. A current rabies certificate must be presented upon request for all pets (not just tags). Vaccine records can be emailed to info@galvestonhumane.org or presented in person at time of check-in, though we suggest emailing as this hastens the check in process. Those walking must be on leash, no longer than 6 feet. No retractable leashes–no exceptions. Control must be maintained at all times.
Beads: Beads will not be provided for the parade and are not required. If you choose to throw beads remember this is a long parade. Plan a way to carry and distribute beads that will be safe for your pets. No candy may be thrown; candy may be dangerous to pets if swallowed! **Bags of beads will be available for purchase at the balcony party.
Rescue Organizations
In the spirit of Mardi Gras, GIHS invites any organized animal rescue organization (501c3) to participate in our parade. This has proven to be a fun venue to get the word out that there are many wonderful pets who need homes while having a good time.
A lead representative of the group should contact the shelter at 409-740-1919 to make arrangements. The fee per group will be a minimum donation of $30 and will not include a t-shirt. Any shirts that are to be purchased should be ordered in advance if possible.

The Krewe of Barkus & Meoux Parade will take place Sunday, February 15th, 2026.
Pre-Registration Check-in, and on-site registration ($30) will begin at 12PM on 21st and Harborside, Pier 21.
Lineup will be along the harbor to 20th St. At 1:30PM the Parade will proceed down 20th Street to the Strand, travel West on the Strand to 25th Street, turn left on Mechanic, and travel East on Mechanic back to 20th Street. There will be water for humans and pets at the end of the parade. Consider the weather and bring additional water for your pet as needed. Bring bags to clean up after your pet as needed.
