A Letter from the Executive Director…
Dear Supporters,

Last week, the public became aware of the intentions of the Corp of Engineers and the response was immediate and heartfelt. I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation for the overwhelming support we have received since that time.

While talking to the many people who called, came by, and emailed, I became aware of two issues I would like to clear up. First, the city officials, (I work most closely with Lloyd Rinderer, Assistant City Manager), have been absolutely on our side and are working to resolve this issue. Everyone from the Mayor to the Animal Services Unit of the Police Department know the value of the work we provide the City of Galveston. They do not plan to see us displaced any more then we want to be.

Also, I need to clarify that the Corp of Engineers decision to ask us to vacate the building was not at a local level. We have several loyal volunteers who work for the local Corp and they were just as distressed as the general public. This decision came from the Ft Worth office. Our local people have always been supportive and we value their friendship.

I do have a bit of good news also in the way of a little update – when you go by our site at 6814 Broadway, you will see great progress. Today, Monday, April 26, 2010, the slab was poured. The building is scheduled to arrive on May 5th and the assembly will begin immediately. So, at best, we will only need this temporary building for approximately six more months. Barring any major weather problems, we hope to move in by November 1st. We have all been waiting a long time for this new shelter.

Funding is still an issue for our new building so we hope you will continue to support our ongoing efforts to acquire needed funds. We have several fundraising event each year and appreciate your support. We also have several community sponsored events planned that are a wonderful way to support us. There are naming opportunities available for areas of the new shelter. You can get additional information on our work and our building at www.galvestonhumane.org.

Again, I personally would like to thank everyone for your support and hope this issue will be resolved as quickly as possible.

For Recognition
Special kudos to Garrett Downs, a 6th grader from Sulphur. LA. He and his family have visited Galveston each year for the Dickens on the Strand festival since he was little. Four years ago he and his sister dressed up as orphans, and with a small siver cup he got at an antique shop, he started begging for change. He was a hit, talking to many people and posing for pictures. That afternoon he went into Strand Brass and met Ginger Grief. They talked about his day and the money he collected. Ginger told Garrett about the Humane Society and right then, he decided that is where his money would go. For the next few years he again, collected money at the event and took it to Ginger for the homeless animals at the shelter.

This past year, now 12 years old, Garrett is no longer an orphan, but a young gentleman, and he saved his money during the year to bring to Dickens for the animals.

This is from Garrett's mother in a note to Ginger; "This has become very special to him and you have really touched his heart. When we evacuated for Hurricane Ike he was especially concerned about you and the animals. When we went to the festival last year and he didn't see your shop he was very upset. I will never forget the look on his face when he saw the two mice at the new doorway. Before I knew it he was inside the door and running to find you. These moments and connections are what makes life so wonderful. Thank you for helping him learn to reach out to others and make a difference.

We are so happy and thankful for Garrett and his giant heart. He is definately a model young man.

Thank you Garrett !

Island Vet Ken Diestler is Honored for Work After Ike
GALVESTON — Dozer seemed happy to see me, despite the fact that he can’t actually see.

He stuck out his tongue and lapped at me while stretching his wide face toward my general vicinity, and he didn’t mind when his nose thumped the chain-link fence that contained him.

Dozer is a good-natured, nearly blind pit bull that was rescued by Dr. Ken Diestler and his veterinary technician Lucy Click in the chaotic days that followed Hurricane Ike.

More than 1,000 animals were rescued on Galveston Island in the weeks after the storm, according the Galveston Humane Society director Caroline Dorsett. More than 400 eventually were reunited with their owners after being shipped to the Houston SPCA.

The Galveston Humane Society, which was leveled after the storm after sustaining hurricane damage, now is the happy recipient of a $5,000 contribution in Diestler’s name from an award he received this year from the Texas Veterinary Medical Association.

The Home and Garden Show is an annual fundraiser for the Galveston Island Humane Society who maintains daily shelter operations, and provides health examinations, medicines, and food for over 3,500 homeless animals. The support of the community is critical to ensure the ever expanding needs of our community’s homeless animal population are met. Without the community’s financial and in-kind support, such programs as cruelty investigations, spay/neuter assistance program, heartworm assistance program, and the emergency care fund would not be possible.

GALVESTON HOME & GARDEN SHOW BLOOMS IN MARCH
GALVESTON, TX – The 21st Annual Galveston Home & Garden Show will be held March 14 & 15, 2009, at the Galveston Island Convention Center at the San Luis Resort, 5500 Seawall Boulevard.

The Home & Garden Show, benefiting the Galveston Island Humane Society, is a showcase of home improvement and gardening products for purchase, professional presentations, exhibits, and demonstrations.

A highlight of the show includes a special appearance and presentation by Bill Stubbs, internationally acclaimed interior designer, author, and host of the PBS series Moment of Luxury. Stubbs appears regularly on Good Morning America and Martha Stewart’s Living television and radio broadcasts. In addition, Daryl McDonald, PhD, published and noted authority on oleanders, will make a presentation on Historic Landscape Gardening and assist gardeners in re-establishing their foliage following the devastation of Hurricane Ike. Gordon Baxter of the Houston Rose Society will offer spectacular roses for sale, and instruct on growing roses successfully on the Gulf Coast, and the Galveston Garden Club will return again with Texas sized giant caladiums.

From swimming pools and home remodeling experts, to lawn and pet care, the Galveston Home & Garden Show is a wonderful way to spend the day with the added bonus of supporting the local animal shelter.

The Galveston Island Humane Society, beneficiary of the event, rescued more than 1,000 pets post Ike. Temporarily housed on 53rd & Avenue U, staff and volunteers picked up, housed, fed, identified and photographed abandoned and lost pets, making every effort to re-unite them with their families via media announcements and web sites. With the cooperation and support of the Houston Humane Society, most of the animals were claimed by their families, adopted or placed in foster homes. The Galveston Island Humane Society will have pets for adoption at the Home & Garden Show. All pet lovers are invited to visit them at the event to learn more about the animal programs and services provided to the community.

More than 100 exhibitors participated in the event last year, and all interested home improvement, gardening, and other related businesses are welcome to participate by reserving a booth to show and sell their merchandise or services. Applications can be found on line at www.galveston.com/homeandgardenshow . The Galveston Home &

HURRICANE IKE UPDATE
The Animal Incident Command Center – Galveston Island was opened to treat and house stray and rescued animals. The shelter is housed at the former police sub-station located at the corner of 53rd Street and Avenue S.

Due to the number of stray and abandoned animals recovered on the island, shelter officials have begun transporting animals to the Houston SPCA facilities ahead of the original schedule. The number of animals on the “shelter in place” list is growing daily. Field crews are providing water and food to more than 250 animals still located in their homes. It is possible these animals will be relocated to island shelter in the near future.

Photos and a brief description of rescued animals will appear on the following website, www.hspca.org. Pet owners will have a 10-day window of time to identify and collect their animals from the date of the photo’s posting. After that point, the animals will be eligible for adoption. Identified pets may be redeemed directly from the Houston SPCA during the time that people are not allowed on the island.

Additionally, the Houston SPCA has initiated a fostering program to place rescued animals temporarily in homes until they are reunited with their owners or adopted out.

Pet owners with inquiries about their animals welfare and whereabouts can call the Houston SPCA’s hotline (713) 435-2990. For more information, please visit www.galvestonhumane.org as well as www.hspca.org.

Plan for Your Pets During Hurricane Season
As hurricane season approaches, the GIHS encourages you to prepare for you and your pets. Pet owners are responsible for disaster planning for their pet(s). If you evacuate, don't forget your best friends. If it's not safe for you, it's not safe for them.

Compile a pet survival kit:

Proper ID collar and rabies tag/license (keep your pets vaccinations up-to-date). Pet shelters will require proof that your pet has had its shots in the last 12 months.

Carrier or cage*

Leash or harness

Ample food supply

Water/food bowls

Any medications (2 week supply)

Specific care instructions

Newspapers, cat litter, scoop, cleaning supplies, plastic trash bags for handling waste

Proper ID on all belongings

Non-electric can opener

The GIHS recommends microchipping of all pets for positive identification. Also, carry a picture of you with your pet for another form of positive ID.

*To purchase pet carriers or crates:

Contact your veterinarianʼs office. They may carry a small selection in stock or be able to order one for your animal.

Visit island retailers for a wider range of crates as well as items to complete your pet(s) disaster survival kit.

Check the internet or mail-order catalogs to order a carrier directly to your home in preparation for storm season.

Be sure to order a crate large enough to comfortably house your pet. If your dog is still a puppy, you may want to buy a carrier that can accommodate a full grown adult dog.

Also, the Galveston Randall's has Pennies for Pets banks at every register. Your change adds up quickly to help the homeless animals.

KrogerPlus Card - We have just been notified that Kroger is replacing its' Good Neighbor Program with the Neighbor to Neighbor Donation Program. Here's how it works. Beginning 5/1/08, a bar code will be assigned to the Galveston Island Humane Society. We will make that available to you at the shelter, on-line and at events. If you ask the checker to scan that bar code, just once, when you present your KrogerPlus Card, you will be contributing to the GIHS every time you shop. You won't need to remember your other card any longer. What could be easier?

Pennies for Pets - The GIHS has Pennies for Pets banks all around town at local businesses. For a complete list of supporting businesses, see our web site at www.galvestonhumane.org. If your business would like to support us with a bank, let us know.

The GIHS accepts recyclable printer cartridges and old cell phones. We also collect aluminum cans with proceeds going to our spay/neuter program.

There is a list of needed itmes on our website also, if you prefer donating food, toys, office items, etc.

Our program will be held the week of February 25 - 29th. This program is supported by Galveston Island veterinarians for island residents. To qualify, residents need to provide financial need at the shelter, pay the minimum fee of $5*, and an appointment will be made.

Rabies vaccinations will also be given as needed. Contact us for more information. (409) 740-1919, come by 6814 Broadway, or email info@galvestonhumane.org.

*Additional donations are accepted to allow us to help more pets.
Dog Survives Near-Strangulation
* (Jan. 10, 2008) — The Humane Society of the United States is offering a reward up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification, arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for causing a young dog to sustain serious injuries from being tethered for about six months in Galveston, Texas.

The Case:
On Thursday, Jan 3rd, we received a call from Officer Cooper of the Galveston Animal Control department. He had just picked up a dog who had been running across a major street in Galveston, almost was hit by several cars and had a rope embedded in her neck. The female shepherd mix was brought to our facility and immediately examined by our vet tech, Lori Lozano. The rope was embedded so deeply it was hardly identifiable, except for the knot at the throat area. The dog was noticeably scared but passive and seemed happy to be helped. The rope had to be cut away with a surgical blade, and the wound was cleaned until a veterinarian could be notified. At that time she was transferred to Campeche Cove Animal Hospital.

Jasmine, as she is now named, is doing very well. The swelling, seen in her face in this photo, has subsided and by morning she was reportedly up, eating and barking at the cats. Dr Jackie Cole reported that it is likely she will make a full recovery.

As the calls come in the the GIHS, we will be taking applications for a home for her. Most importantly, she needs to be in a home willing to work with her. Love will undoubtedly be a new experience for Jasmine and she deserves a chance at a forever home.

Donations may be made to assist with her medical care to the GIHS. Click on the "Contributions" link on the left side of our website for information about donating online or by mail.

*Do you recognize Jasmine? The case of Jasmine's abuse is being investigated by the Galveston Police Department. Please contact the shelter (409) 740-1919 or the Galveston Police Department (409) 765-3702 with any information leading to the identity of the previous owner.
The 10th Annual Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Mardi Gras Parade
Mark your calendar now - The 10th Annual Krewe of Barkus and Meoux Parade will be held on February 3rd, 2008.

The Krewe of Barkus and Meoux was formed in 1999 to provide a festive venue for pet owners to celebrate and share their beloved pets. It also serves as a fundraiser for the shelter benefiting the daily operations of the Galveston Island Humane Society. This year’s celebration will include a costume contest and microchip clinic prior to the parade.

Last year we had just over 210 pets in all species, sizes, and shapes, happily escorted by their humans. A pre-parade costume judging will be held with winners making up the royal court and escorting the 2008 King or Queen. Pets, as well as their humans, are encouraged to wear their Mardi Gras finest or any fun outfits that make them feel good.

If you would like to be included on our mail list, please email
caroline@galvestonhumane.org or call (409) 740-1919.

Christmas Wishes from Century 21 Bay Reef Realty
Olive, a 4 year old spayed female brown tabby checks out some of the many donations received for the Holidays. All of the animals and the staff are thankful for the donations received and hoping all pets find a Happy Home for the New Year

The Galveston Island Humane Society recieved a generous holiday gift from friends at Century 21 Bay Reef Realty - read on from their letter:

Merry Christmas to our fluffy, furry, and floppy friends at the Animal Shelter.

Century 21 Bay Reef Realty had their annual Christmas party, and instead of collecting for children, everyone brought each of you a gift. You are just gonna love all the toys, food and supplies. We also have a little bit of money to help build your new facility.

You have some really good people taking care of you. Two ladies spoke on your behalf to a group of women at the Country Club. That's when we got the idea to make your Christmas happier this year.

Even if you have to spend Christmas at the shelter, give thanks. You know, you could be running the streets all hungry and cold. I know each of you can sing, so on Christmas morning, all you you go to the front of your cages and sing in your best voice, "Joy to the World"!

HAVE A VERY BLESSED CHRISTMAS! (and a Happy New Year!)

From your two legged friends,
Century 21 Bay Reef Realty, Galveston Texas

Santa Paws Success
Ho ho ho! The 2008 Santa Paws event was a success, raising more than $600 for the GIHS shelter operations fund and spreading good cheer to friends with two legs and four.

Special thanks to Peggy Cornelius and Tom’s Thumb Nursery, and all our elves – Ann, Cissy, Brenda, Laura, Jeannie, Joel, Ed and Mildred.

There are many ways to support the Galveston Humane Society this holiday season. Make a donation online, host an event supporting the shelter or adopt one of our many furry friends. Explore our website for more information!
Happy Birthday Andrew!
Andrew Turner makes a special birthday wish each year; instead of asking for personal toys and trinkets, he asks his guests to bring a food donation for the Galveston Island Humane Society. His goal was to collect over 1,000 pounds of food and he exceeded that with over 2,000 pounds of food along with some cash donations!

This year more than 100 guests attended Andrew’s birthday celebration, complete with pizza (generously donated from Cici’s and Pizza Hut), prizes ( Tortuga ’s donated gift cards and coupons) and a special gift from Randall’s – 800 pounds of food for our shelter!

The GIHS sends out special birthday greetings to Andrew and thanks everyone for making his wish – and the animal’s – come true!

Are you interested in hosting a party or event benefiting the GIHS? Contact Caroline Dorsett at (409) 740-1919 for more information.

LUCKY PAWS GALA - An Asian Fantasy
THE GALVESTON ISLAND HUMANE SOCIETY
2007 Paws Gala
Presents the
LUCKY PAWS GALA - An Asian Fantasy

The 8th Annual Paws Gala will be held Saturday, September 22nd, in the Ballroom of the Galveston Island Convention Center at the San Luis Resort. This year's Gala, with an Asian theme, will be hosted by Frank Billingsley of KPRC Local 2 News in Houston and will honor Jim Nonus for his continuing support of our work at the Humane Society.

As in the past, we will have ten Elite Pet Owners proudly featuring their pets. They are Craig Eiland, Laura Flores, Dr. Jim Grant, Lauren Hall, Jim Little, Maureen McCutchen, Dr. Sharon Petronella, Jyll Rekoff, Dr. Joan Richardson, and Dr. Barbara Thomas. If you know any of these people, please support their goal to make their dog or cat the "Pet of the Year." The owner who raises the most money for this event wins this title.

The local designers who will provide the themed vignette settings, include; Albert Chavarria, Island Flowers, Island Innovations, Sunset Flowers, and Tom's Thumb Nursery.

The money raised at the Paws Gala is part of our Capital Campaign and will be dedicated to the building of a new, modern shelter for the lost and homeless animals on the Island.

The evening will include visiting the vignettes with the featured pets, dinner, dancing to the music of the Line-Up, and an incredible silent auction. The co-chairs of the event are Brenda Atchley, Michelle Beckwith, and Ginger Grief, all of whom did such a great job last year with the African Safari theme. This will be an evening to look forward to and for a great cause.

For additional information contact Brenda at 409-763-0557. For ticket information, please contact the GIHS at 409-740-1919.

Trinity Middle School Outreach Project
The Trinity Middle School, Bishop Cilley Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society, Spring Outreach Project organized a supplies drive from grades K - 8. These students organized this very successful drive on their own and we really appreciate the difference it made to the ASAC. Thank you so much!!

Co-Sponsors: Sue Langston & Peggy Boening
October Update
The ASAC would like to thank all who contacted us in concern for the evacuated pets of the shelter. All pets were safely evauated and left early so they did not spend hours on the road. Only some cats returned to the shelter after the all clear was given to make room at the Houston SPCA for pets from the East Texas coast. The ASAC provided free board for evacuated dogs and cats that had owners in shelters or motels. Happily most of these have now returned home and things are getting closer to the normal operations of the shelter. Donated food and supplies were forwarded on through the Houston Humane Society to a reopening shelter in LA and to a local shelter who was in need.

A special thanks to Habitat for Horses (Lark Tedesco and Karen Nelson) who assisted with the evacuation with a truck and trailer. Also, Cathy Conlon-Townsend and Joel Caldwell with their personal SUV's, volunteers; Joan Self, Vickie Francil and Kim Schoolcraft, and the staff, who all did a wonderful job with our animals.
Additional Update
We are accepting and caring for pets of families displaced by Hurricane Katrina and the disasters that have followed. We are also accepting donations of food, litter and money for their care which we also plan to use for evacuees in Galveston who may be here for a long time and will need assistance. We are greatly touched and appreciate the outpouring of concern for these animals.

We have organized a drive to collect food, pets supplies, cleaning supplies, towels, etc. and of course $$ for shelters or rescues as they open in any of the affected states or wherever needed. These supplies will be collected at the shelter and any of the veterinary clinics on the island.
Relief Effort Udate
We have become aware that there is an email posting that we have overwhelmed here at the shelter. While we are accepting and caring for pets of families displaced by Hurricane Katrina and the disasters that have followed, we are NOT what I would call "inundated." We do have pets here, and some in foster homes, but we are managing.

Again, thank you for your concern and many offers of assistance. We all know well how big the hearts of Animal Lovers are. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me (409) 740-1919. If things change greatly, I know where to turn!

People in Houston and the surrounding area who wish to help should contact the Houston SPCA at their emergency hotline (713) 802-0555.

Thank you for your concern and help!

Land for a New Shelter
On Thursday, March 31, 2005 the ASAC closed on land purchased from the City of Galveston. The tract of land is a little under 1 acre, includes the site and building where our current shelter is located and the tract of land directly to the north. Look for us to clear the property soon and to kick off our capital campaign. If you have any questions or would like to become involved, please contact the shelter.
PAWS Gala Update
Due to Hurricane Ike, the annual Paws Gala (Scheduled to be held on September 20th) had to be cancelled. So many of you helped us prepare for this event by donating silent auction items. Unfortunately, all donations were located in a home that was badly flooded and all items were lost. In additional, all auction donation forms were destroyed, making individual thank you notes impossible. Please accept our sincere appreciation for your donation.

In addition, many of you paid for ads and/or pet pictures that were to be printed in the Paws Gala program. We are so grateful for your willingness to participate in the gala and are so disappointed that it had to be cancelled.

On behalf of our furry friends, thank you and please keep supporting our worthy cause!
Help make our Holiday Bright
The Galveston Island Humane Society still has a long Christmas wish list for our new, temporary facility!

We are in dire need of the following items for the holidays and beyond:

- Monetary donations and gift cards from retailers like WalMart, Target, Office Depot, Petco and Petsmart, Home Depot and Lowes.
- Towels and washcloths
- Office supplies

Have that "hard to buy for" person on your Holiday gift list? Consider purchasing a leaf or stone on the "Gift of Life" tree! Your donation will ensure their name is associated with our new facility forever. It's the gift that keeps on giving to our four-legged friends.

For more information about donations or contributions, please contact Caroline Dorsett at gihs@sbcglobal.net.
