Greetings from the Galveston Island Humane Society,

On September 13th, 2008 Hurricane Ike completely destroyed the Galveston Island Humane Society (GIHS) facility. Immediately following Hurricane Ike, the Galveston Island Humane Society was the lead agency overseeing the rescue, feeding and re-homing of over 1,800 animals on the Island.

In the past 2 years, the average number of pets received by the GIHS is over 2,300? Currently working out of a temporary shelter the GIHS continues to care for the welfare of those unwanted, lost, or homeless animals by providing: temporary refuge and care, including vaccinations, worming, grooming, and treatment of minor injuries; maintaining a spay/neuter assistance program, adoption promotion through regular shelter hours and frequent outside adoption programs; and community education toward the care and prevention of cruelty to animals.

Construction of the new Galveston Island Humane Society is under way and will allow for the sheltering and care of our homeless animals in a healthy, attractive environment that we feel will lend itself to participation by the public in better pet care and adoptions. Today the Galveston Island Humane Society is asking for your much needed support.
