Special kudos to Garrett Downs, a 6th grader from Sulphur. LA. He and his family have visited Galveston each year for the Dickens on the Strand festival since he was little. Four years ago he and his sister dressed up as orphans, and with a small siver cup he got at an antique shop, he started begging for change. He was a hit, talking to many people and posing for pictures. That afternoon he went into Strand Brass and met Ginger Grief. They talked about his day and the money he collected. Ginger told Garrett about the Humane Society and right then, he decided that is where his money would go. For the next few years he again, collected money at the event and took it to Ginger for the homeless animals at the shelter.
This past year, now 12 years old, Garrett is no longer an orphan, but a young gentleman, and he saved his money during the year to bring to Dickens for the animals.
This is from Garrett's mother in a note to Ginger; "This has become very special to him and you have really touched his heart. When we evacuated for Hurricane Ike he was especially concerned about you and the animals. When we went to the festival last year and he didn't see your shop he was very upset. I will never forget the look on his face when he saw the two mice at the new doorway. Before I knew it he was inside the door and running to find you. These moments and connections are what makes life so wonderful. Thank you for helping him learn to reach out to others and make a difference.
We are so happy and thankful for Garrett and his giant heart. He is definately a model young man.
Thank you Garrett !
