| HURRICANE IKE UPDATE |
 |
The Animal Incident Command Center – Galveston Island was opened to treat and house stray and rescued animals. The shelter is housed at the former police sub-station located at the corner of 53rd Street and Avenue S.
Due to the number of stray and abandoned animals recovered on the island, shelter officials have begun transporting animals to the Houston SPCA facilities ahead of the original schedule. The number of animals on the “shelter in place” list is growing daily. Field crews are providing water and food to more than 250 animals still located in their homes. It is possible these animals will be relocated to island shelter in the near future.
Photos and a brief description of rescued animals will appear on the following website, www.hspca.org. Pet owners will have a 10-day window of time to identify and collect their animals from the date of the photo’s posting. After that point, the animals will be eligible for adoption. Identified pets may be redeemed directly from the Houston SPCA during the time that people are not allowed on the island.
Additionally, the Houston SPCA has initiated a fostering program to place rescued animals temporarily in homes until they are reunited with their owners or adopted out.
Pet owners with inquiries about their animals welfare and whereabouts can call the Houston SPCA’s hotline (713) 435-2990. For more information, please visit www.galvestonhumane.org as well as www.hspca.org.
