| Plan for Your Pets During Hurricane Season |
 |
As hurricane season approaches, the GIHS encourages you to prepare for you and your pets. Pet owners are responsible for disaster planning for their pet(s). If you evacuate, don't forget your best friends. If it's not safe for you, it's not safe for them.
Compile a pet survival kit:
Proper ID collar and rabies tag/license (keep your pets vaccinations up-to-date). Pet shelters will require proof that your pet has had its shots in the last 12 months.
Carrier or cage*
Leash or harness
Ample food supply
Water/food bowls
Any medications (2 week supply)
Specific care instructions
Newspapers, cat litter, scoop, cleaning supplies, plastic trash bags for handling waste
Proper ID on all belongings
Non-electric can opener
The GIHS recommends microchipping of all pets for positive identification. Also, carry a picture of you with your pet for another form of positive ID.
*To purchase pet carriers or crates:
Contact your veterinarianʼs office. They may carry a small selection in stock or be able to order one for your animal.
Visit island retailers for a wider range of crates as well as items to complete your pet(s) disaster survival kit.
Check the internet or mail-order catalogs to order a carrier directly to your home in preparation for storm season.
Be sure to order a crate large enough to comfortably house your pet. If your dog is still a puppy, you may want to buy a carrier that can accommodate a full grown adult dog.
